Cake has always been a magical thing for me. Seriously, what could be better!? My husband agreed, so I married him. Our wedding was all about the cake. And each other, and fun, and love and all that stuff of course. But there was a beautiful little delicious cake on every single table, and that was the best part of the wedding, aside from marrying my best friend.
Fast forward nearly five years and we’re busy managing life with a toddler in a piss-poor economy. Sometimes life sucks. I think it’s been a couple of months since my husband and I had some grown-up time, let alone a date. Now I can remember, it was our anniversary in July when we last experienced that strange phenomenon. The daily routine had us grunting need-to-know information to each other once or twice a day between errands, work, and dirty diapers. Then fate intervened. My husband won some tickets to a comedy club, we both were work free that night, the teenager was more than happy to be left alone to play the new Call of Duty, and my best friend was happy to watch the toddler. I heard angels singing. No, actually it was laughter, our beautiful laughter.
The date was amazing. The comedians were funny. Our hearts and bellies were full. And then Greg Behrendt, comedian and co-author of He’s Just Not That Into You, started talking about cake. I couldn’t believe it. Another person who also believed – and shared in hilarious means – that life is worth living because there might be cake. And cake is always good. Cake is fan-freaking-tastic.
It was just what I needed: Time away from the daily grind with my husband, lots of laughter, and a reminder to enjoy the simple things in life. Although I didn’t get a chance to eat any cake, there was plenty of cake for my heart and mind.

Holy moly, a little cake at each table? That’s such an amazing idea! I may end up borrowing it for my wedding next September.
“My husband agreed, so I married him.” – funny.
The cakes were so awesome! It saved money on the cake and centerpieces. There were three styles, all absolutely delicious and so pretty. All of our guests were raving about them too!
I think I may need to make some cake today…
You hit the nail on the head (or is it “slapped the frosting on the cake”) with this posting! Cake is yummy and a date with your hubby is even yummier.
That cake looks awesome. Mmm, yummy.
Dawn – tell ‘em about which flavors, what designs, and from where!
Terminator Chocolate was the cake in the picture. There was also a carrot cake (with raisens for the husband) decorated with similar color stripes across it and lemon cakes with cute swirls. I made cake stands for each table by gluing pretty cut glass plates to sturdy glass candlesticks, all found at Goodwill for pennies. A few flower petals, candles, and a dollar store cake knife made each centerpiece complete! Email me if you want specifics on the wedding venue where the catering and cakes were also made.
Oh great. I’ve just spent 10 minutes on Greg Behrendt’s video clips thanks to you. Work will be so pleased.
